Can I paint garden and flower pots?
Bauwerk limewash paint is perfect for painting old or new terracotta, cement, masonry or stone plant pots that are used inside or outside. Using limewash paint versus conventional acrylic paint allows the pots to breathe which is better for your plants. This coating also reflects heat, keeping plant roots cooler.
Limewash paint is easy to apply and layer multiple colours. It’s also very easy to recoat with different colours to suit the season. The final result is a matte, natural earthy appearance.
What type of planter or terracotta pot can I paint with Garden Pot Limewash Paint?
All planters and garden pots made of absorbent materials can be painted. Glazed or sealed vessels are not suitable.
To test if your pot is absorbent simply apply some water to the surface and observe how the water is either absorbed into the surface or is rejected.
Is Bawerk Garden Pot paint the same as Bauwerk Limewash Paint for your walls?
Yes, our Garden Limewash Paint is the same, just packaged appropriately in the quantity needed for smaller areas.
Do I need to seal the surface or the inside of the planters or flower pots before limewashing?
We do not recommend sealing your garden pots. A breathable surface is better for the root system of your plants. It will also be easier to re-apply some paint for the next season.
How do you cleanup after limewashing plant pots?
Simply wash out your brushes with water. There will be no harm to groundwater.
How do I limewash garden pots?
Our 3x7cm Block Brush with Red Body is great for painting garden pots. Our brushes are made from natural fibres specially sourced for lime paint application. Their unique bristle structure retains the correct amount of paint and releases it evenly across the surface during painting.
- Shake your limewash well before opening, then stir thoroughly
- Transfer to a slightly larger container and make sure all colour pigments are well mixed
- Stir every 2 – 3 minutes
- Briefly clean and moisten the planter pot before painting
- Do not apply paint too thick and stretch out well in all directions
- At first, the colour appears a bit darker and more transparent, this will change after drying
- Once your first coat is dry – after about an hour you can apply subsequent coats, 2–3 coats is recommended
- To wash your brush simply rinse with water, press into shape again, then let dry upright
Over time your colours will develop subtle highs and lows creating a unique and beautiful finish. You can change the colour for the next season or the next year.

How long will limewash paint last on flower pots?
This depends on how often the pot is watered and what soil type is used. Usually the paint will last for a season or so and can then very quickly and easily reapplied, sanded back or a new colour applied on top of the existing coat.
Over time your pots will develop an interesting patina.
